Poetry terms to know.

Alliteration- is the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words.
Analogy- is a point-by-point comparison between two things are alike in some respect.
Assonance- is the repetition of vowel sounds within non-rhyming words.
Consonance- the repetition of consonants at the end of the words.
Ballad- is a poem that tells a story and is ment to be sung or recited.
Blank verse- is an unrhymed poetry written in iambic pentameter.
Figurative language- is the language that communicates ideas beyond the ordinary.
Free Verse- is poetry that does not contain a regular pattern of rhyme and meter.
Haiku- a poem that consist of 5-7-5 rule.
Imagery- consist of descriptive words and phases that re-create sensory experiences.
Lyric Poem- a short poem in which a single speaker expresses personal thoughts and feeling.
Narrative Poem- tells a story.
Ode- a lyrical poem to show emotion.
Rhyme- the occurrence of a similar or identical sound at the ends of two or more words.
Rhythm- Refers to the pattern of flow of sound created by the arrangement of stress andunstressed syllables in a line of poetry.
Shakespearean sonnet- a sonnet form used by Shakespeare and having the rhyme abab, cdcd, efef, gg.
Petrarchan sonnet- a sonnet form popularized by Petrarch, consisting of an octavewith the rhyme scheme abbaabba
